A custom steel door project starts with a clear brief and ends with an approved specification that your supplier and installer can use. Dimensions, swing, glass, finish and hardware all need to agree before production. Custom ordering provides design choices within the selected manufacturer’s capabilities; it does not mean every combination is available.

1. Prepare your project brief
Send photographs of the existing opening or the relevant architectural drawings. Include the project location, whether it is an interior or exterior opening, the preferred design and your target installation date. Describe exposure to rain, coastal air or strong sun so the supplier can review suitability.
Identify whether you need a single door, double door, sidelights or a transom. For commercial projects, provide the door schedule and required performance criteria at the start. A residential design should not be assumed suitable for a commercial opening.
2. Verify measurements and operation
Have your installer confirm the opening before final ordering. Distinguish the rough opening, overall frame dimensions, door-leaf dimensions and usable clear opening. Record wall depth, finished floor levels and the proposed threshold position.

3. Select glass and finish
Choose the glass pattern and desired privacy level, then confirm the exact glazing specification. Review the arrangement of lites, grille details and alignment with any sidelights or transom. Ask whether the chosen glass is available in the proposed dimensions and configuration.
Approve the finish using the supplier’s reference or sample where available. Confirm color, sheen and any differences between the door and hardware finish. Ask whether the product arrives fully finished or requires additional work; do not assume every steel door arrives primed or that every finish can be repainted in the same way.
4. Request product-specific performance documents
Ask for the construction details and relevant thermal, air, water or structural information for the selected assembly. Confirm what insulation and thermal-break features are included rather than inferring performance from the steel material alone.
If the project requires fire, forced-entry, storm or acoustic performance, request evidence for that specific requirement and configuration. These are separate claims. A custom size, decorative appearance or heavy door does not establish a tested rating, and a thermal break should not be treated as a guarantee against condensation in every condition.

5. Coordinate handles and locks
Select the handle and lock together with the door preparation. Confirm dimensions, operation, finish and which components are included in the quote. For double doors, identify the active-leaf lock and secondary-leaf securing hardware.
If you want a smart lock or access-control system, request compatibility confirmation before manufacturing. Do not assume a device will fit an existing preparation. Include any wiring, power, service access or project-specific exit-operation requirements in the review.
6. Approve the quote and drawing
Check that the latest drawing and written quote describe the same dimensions, handing, glass, finish and hardware. Identify included frames, thresholds, seals and accessories, plus delivery and installation scope. Compare complete proposals rather than a generic installed-price range.
Confirm production timing, payment milestones, warranty terms and how changes are handled after approval. Custom doors and windows are non-returnable at USA Builders Depot. Review the refund policy and resolve any unclear specification before approving the order.
Keep a dated copy of the approved drawing and order confirmation. If details change, obtain a revised written confirmation so everyone works from the same specification.
7. Plan delivery, installation and care
Agree on delivery access, unloading arrangements, handling equipment and storage before shipment. Confirm who will inspect the delivery and how any damage or discrepancy must be reported under the applicable terms.
Give the installer the current instructions and approved drawings. Coordinate anchoring, surrounding construction, threshold and flashing details for the selected system. Avoid scheduling dependent finishing work solely around an unconfirmed arrival date.
At handover, check movement, latching and locking through normal operation. Keep the warranty, product identification and maintenance instructions. Follow the specified cleaning, lubrication and finish-repair methods rather than a universal treatment or service interval.
