Wall Sconce Light: A Guide to Choosing & Using Them

A wall sconce should suit the space after dark as well as it does in a product photo. Start with the location, the area you want to illuminate and the mounting surface. Then compare dimensions, light output and the exact fixture's installation requirements before choosing a finish.

1. Choose the purpose and location

Decide whether the fixture should illuminate a doorway, add light beside seating or highlight a wall. A decorative beam on cladding may not illuminate the ground or a door lock. Walk through the space and mark the surfaces that actually need light.

For a porch or entry, consider the door swing, house numbers, steps and nearby windows. For an indoor hallway or bedside location, consider walking clearance and seated sightlines. Do not assume an attractive indoor sconce is approved for an exterior installation.

2. Check size and placement before drilling

Record the fixture's height, width, projection and backplate dimensions. Compare these with the available wall area and the existing electrical box. A large shade can extend beyond a narrow mounting surface even when its backplate fits.

Use a paper template to compare scale from the approach to the house. Check the proposed position with doors open, and view it from standing and seated positions. Universal mounting heights or door-to-fixture ratios are starting ideas, not installation requirements. Have your installer confirm the final position against the fixture instructions and site requirements.

When coordinating with steel doors or exterior wall panels, review finish samples and dimensions together. Similar finish names do not guarantee identical colors or sheen.

3. Compare light output, color and glare separately

Lumens describe light output; watts describe power use. Color temperature, expressed in kelvin, describes the appearance of the light rather than its brightness. The Department of Energy's lighting guide explains these distinctions.

Compare the listed output and light distribution as well as the appearance of the shade. Clear glass can expose a bright lamp, while a shielded or diffused design changes how the light is seen. A high output number alone does not establish that the entrance will be evenly illuminated.

Ask whether a sample or lighting diagram is available. Consider reflected light from pale walls, shadows on steps and glare toward neighboring windows. Select the color temperature alongside nearby fixtures so the overall effect feels consistent.

4. Confirm suitability for the actual exposure

Give your installer the exact product specification and a photo of the proposed location. Ask them to confirm the required dry, damp or wet location suitability for that exposure. A roof above a fixture does not, by itself, settle whether wind-driven rain can reach it.

Check permitted mounting orientation, temperature limits and any coastal-use restrictions in the manufacturer's documentation. Finish color and material names alone do not establish corrosion resistance. Likewise, do not assume a fixture has a particular certification unless the selected model's documentation identifies it.

5. Review lamps, dimming and controls

Confirm whether the fixture uses replaceable lamps or an integrated LED light source. For replaceable lamps, check the specified base, size, maximum wattage and any enclosed-fixture requirements. Ask whether lamps are included. For integrated lighting, ask about service parts and what the warranty covers.

Dimming, motion detection, dusk-to-dawn operation and app control are model-specific features. Confirm compatibility among the fixture, lamp, dimmer and any separate control before ordering. A smart lamp is not automatically suitable for every enclosure or existing dimmer.

6. Plan installation and ongoing care

Have a qualified electrician review the supply, electrical box, mounting support and controls. Exterior mounting also needs coordination with the wall assembly and the fixture's sealing and drainage instructions. Follow those documents rather than a universal caulking or wiring recipe.

Before closing out the work, check operation after dark, control settings and glare from normal viewing positions. Keep the model number, instructions and purchase record together. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning procedure for the finish and lens; do not assume household glass cleaners or abrasives are suitable.

7. Prepare a complete lighting order

• Exact model, finish and quantity for each location.
• Fixture dimensions, backplate size and projection.
• Location suitability and approved mounting orientation.
• Lamp or integrated LED details, output and color temperature.
