Steel Door Glass Lites Guide: Compare 3-Lite, 4-Lite, 5-Lite, and 8-Lite Doors

The front door of any tastefully designed home says something before you even open it. Regardless of its colour, design, or hardware, the real deal is its glass. More specifically, the number of glass panels used in the door.

If you've ever been to a store and seen a steel French door labelled 3-lite, 5-lite, 8-lite, or something similar, you've come to the right place. The number of panels adds a unique dimension to the door's look and to the amount of light that enters the room from the front. The right choice will make the door look great, while the wrong one will always feel off.

In this article, we'll discuss the types of steel door glass lites available at USA Builders Depot.

What Are Glass Lites on a Steel Door?

A lite is a pane of glass placed in a door panel. The number in its name indicates how many glass panels there are in each door panel. This means that a 3-lite door panel has three pieces of glass, and an 8-lite door panel has eight.

However, this number does not indicate the area of glass per door. For example, a 3-lite door can let in as much, or even more, lite as an 8-lite door, depending on the size and placement of its glass panes. The number of lites reflects the door's design more than anything else.

USA Builders Depot's steel French doors are available in 3-, 4-, 5-, and 8-lite models, including single- and double-sided versions. Each door has its own unique characteristics.

3-Lite Steel Doors: Clean, Open, and Modern

Arranged vertically or in an open pattern, 3-lite windows offer an attractive modern look with large glass openings. In most cases, the panels are quite tall and wide, creating a sense of looking up and adding height and spaciousness to your entryway.

Best for: Modern, contemporary, or modern farmhouse styles. A 3-lite structure works well with designs that don't have much exterior ornamentation. Double 3-lite style creates a very wide opening that looks almost entirely glass.

Light vs Privacy: Lots of light but little privacy. Everything is clearly visible from both sides. If your entryway is on a busy street or your front door is within reach of the sidewalk, consider adding a covered porch or using frosted glass with 3-lite configuration.

Available at USA Builders' Depot: Single 3-lite doors in 36x80 and 36x96. Double 3-lite doors from 60x80 up to 72x96, starting around $3,950.

4-Lite Steel Doors: Balanced and Versatile

Four glass panels create a balanced grid pattern on the door — usually a simple two-by-two square arrangement or a long column of four vertical panels. Four glass panels are right in the middle of all possible panel types — it's the best combination of the two, not as open as three panels and not as traditional as five or eight panels.

Best for: A variety of home styles. For those who aren't sure what type of steel door glass lites would suit their home, four glass panels are a safe choice. They work well in traditional, transitional, and contemporary homes, but aren't too flashy.

Light vs. Privacy: Plenty of light and little extra design. The dividing lines between the glass lites add interest to the view outside without reducing the amount of natural light inside.

Available at USA Builders Depot: Single 4-lite steel doors are available in 36x80 and 36x96 sizes for $2,100 each. Double 4-lite 'new design' steel doors are available in sizes 60x80 to 72x96. This new door design is especially well-suited for new construction.

5-Lite Steel Doors: Traditional Feel, Modern Build

Five glass panels make this door classic and elegant. This design is usually done vertically - five glass panels are arranged vertically on a pillar or in any combination. It is a modern take on the traditional European door design and is therefore suitable for French doors.

Best for: Traditional, Craftsman or Transitional style. If your home's exterior has a lot of decorative elements, such as brick, board-and-batten, shingle siding, or trim, this style will fit in well with them.

Light vs Privacy: A 5-lite door allows equal light as 4-lite to enter, but its slightly more compact design creates a visual barrier between the inside and outside. This type of door is not known as a privacy door, though it gives a more homely feel than a 3-lite door.

Available at USA Builders Depot: 5-lite Double Steel French Door in 60x80 and 60x96 sizes, starting at $3,850.

8-Lite Steel Doors: Maximum Light, Classic Character

The majority of the 8-lite door surface consists of eight glass panels. This is exactly the number of glass panels you need to make your entryway a light source. These panels are small and densely arranged, creating a wide design similar to traditional French windows — intricate, elegant, and timeless.

Best for: Those who want maximum light in their home and love the beauty of traditional French doors. The 8-lite design is perfect for double doors, as they can showcase more detailed designs. If your entryway faces a garden, patio, or a beautifully landscaped front yard, the 8 panels will frame your view.

Light vs Privacy: Of all the types of steel doors, glass lite has the best light transmission. Privacy is low — it's not recommended if the door is located right next to a sidewalk. However, if there is a covered entryway or proper landscaping, the 8-lite door can be one of the most popular front door designs.

Available at USA Builders' Depot: Single 8-lite doors in 36x80 and 36x96 sizes, starting at $2,100. Regular and double 8-lite doors in 60x120 sizes — the double door is the tallest door in our collection.

Does Lite Count Affect Security?

The question that often arises is, "Does the use of glass reduce the security of the door?"

Not much, because the glass here is tempered and protected by a steel frame. The design of steel French doors features a steel frame in the middle; the glass is enclosed within it, which does not affect the door's strength or durability. The steel door frame, hinges and lock set make it secure.

For security, you can use any number of glass panels with a compatible multi-point lock system. Suitable lock sets are available at USA Builders Depot to secure any steel door while maintaining its beauty.

How to Choose the Right Steel Door Glass Lites for Your Home

Four things to help you decide quickly:

How much light do you want? Choose an 8-lite or 3-lite door to brighten up a dark entryway. If you prefer a warmer, more subdued feel, a 4-lite or 5-lite door will add a cosy glow without flooding your home with light.

What's your home's architectural style? Choose a 3-lite or 4-lite door for a contemporary or modern home. Use a 5-lite or 8-lite door for a traditional, transitional, or Craftsman-style home. When in doubt, choose a door that matches your existing window frames and exterior design.

How exposed is the entry? If passersby can see directly into your foyer through your entryway, more lite will reduce this visual gap. A porch, recessed entry, or frosted glass above the door will restore privacy. If your home has a deep porch or fenced yard, no lite is appropriate.

Single or double? Double doors require more lites, as they need to cover most of the door. 3-lite double doors give a very modern feel, while 8-lite doors give the impression of a glass wall. Adjust the drama based on your home's size.

Frequently Asked Questions About Steel Door Glass Lites

What does "lite" mean on a steel door? A lite refers to a piece of glass installed in the door. The number before the word lite indicates the number of pieces of glass used in each panel of the door.

Which steel door glass lites let in the most natural light? The 8-lite configuration lets in the most light, since most of the door is covered in glass. The 3-lite configuration is also close, especially when the configuration features long glass panels that reach the ceiling.

Are doors with more lites less secure? This is not always true. The security of a steel door depends on its steel core, hinges, locking system, and frame – but not on the proportion of glass it contains. The glass is usually tempered.

Can I get frosted or custom glass on any lite count? Yes. USA Builders Depot offers the option to customise the glass style. See the custom doors section for a discussion of the various possibilities.

Which Lite Count sells the most? 3-lite and 4-lite double doors sell best, especially for modern and transitional homes. The 8-lite single door is a popular option for homeowners who want more light through their doors.

Find Your Fit

The right steel door glass lites will depend on your home's architectural design, lighting needs, and the size of the door opening. There's no one-size-fits-all solution, but after seeing what each type of glass looks like on an actual door, you'll be able to make a quick decision.
