Handing terminology can vary between suppliers, drawings, installers, and manufacturers. The safest way to order a steel door is to confirm the swing visually and in writing before production or shipment.
Information to confirm
- Inswing or outswing
- Which side the hinges are on when viewed from the agreed reference side
- Which leaf is active on a double door
- Which leaf is passive on a double door
- Hardware and lockset location
- Interior and exterior reference side
Use a drawing whenever possible
For custom or high-value steel doors, a marked plan, elevation, or approved handing diagram is preferable to relying on abbreviations alone.
Double-door handing
For double doors, confirm the active leaf, passive leaf, hinge locations, swing direction, and hardware preparation. This is especially important when matching an existing opening or architectural plan.
