A steel door should not be ordered from a generic rough-opening rule alone. The required opening depends on the exact door unit, frame profile, jamb depth, threshold, anchoring method, wall condition, and installation instructions for the selected model.
Start with the exact unit size
Confirm whether the listed product dimension refers to the door slab, frame, or complete unit. Use the current product drawing or installation document for the selected model whenever available.
Information to confirm before framing
- Exact door model and nominal size
- Single, double, or sidelight configuration
- Frame outside dimensions
- Jamb depth and wall thickness
- Threshold and sill condition
- Anchoring requirements
- Required installation clearance
- Finished floor elevation
- Water-management and flashing conditions
Do not transfer rough-opening dimensions between models
Two steel doors with the same nominal size can use different frames or installation details. A rough opening confirmed for one profile should not be assumed to apply to another profile.
