Large-format porcelain tile can create broad areas of color or pattern with fewer joints than a smaller tile layout. The best choice for your project depends on where it will be installed, its approved uses and how the size works with the room.
Use this guide to compare options and prepare a complete order. Confirm current specifications, availability and installation requirements for the exact tile before purchasing.
Start with the intended application
A porcelain label alone does not confirm suitability for every wall, floor or outdoor location. Check the manufacturer’s recommended uses and relevant performance information for the chosen product and finish.

Tile and grout do not replace the waterproofing system required in a wet-area assembly. A textured appearance is also not proof that a tile is suitable for a wet floor. Have the designer or installer review the product’s documented surface performance for the intended conditions.
Compare dimensions, thickness and finish
Check actual dimensions, thickness, coverage per box and edge type. Large-format tiles and thin porcelain panels or slabs may require different handling and installation methods; do not treat them as interchangeable products.
Polished finishes reflect light, while matte and textured finishes create different visual effects. Compare samples under the room’s lighting and review cleaning requirements. Finish names alone do not establish slip resistance or suitability for a particular floor.
For printed stone-look designs, review the available face variation and pattern direction. Confirm whether a coordinated or bookmatched arrangement is actually offered rather than assuming every tile can create one.
Draw the layout before calculating quantities
Measure the room and mark doorways, transitions, fixtures and visible edges. Plan joints and cut pieces so the layout works with the room instead of relying only on total square footage.
Large tiles can look effective in a small room, but the number and position of cuts may affect material use and labor. Ask your installer to calculate the order quantity from the proposed layout, including an appropriate cutting allowance and any spare material.
Fewer joints does not mean a joint-free surface. Confirm grout-joint widths, movement joints and any pattern-offset limits from the applicable product and installation instructions. A matching grout color can reduce visual contrast without eliminating necessary joints.
Review preparation and handling with the installer
Have an installer experienced with the selected tile size assess the substrate, support, access and cutting requirements before work starts. Surface flatness matters; a floor designed to drain may also need a planned slope rather than being level everywhere.
The installation system should address substrate preparation, compatible bonding materials, required coverage, joints and curing conditions. Tile leveling accessories do not replace a properly prepared substrate or the required bonding coverage.
For shower floors, coordinate tile size and cuts with the drain and slope design. A linear drain may support some layouts, but it is not a universal solution or a substitute for a complete waterproofing and drainage design.
Plan safe delivery and handling, including access through doors, stairs and the work area. Large pieces may need specialized equipment and additional people. Follow the selected system’s instructions rather than a generic trowel or adhesive recommendation.
Compare the complete installed cost
Request current pricing for the exact tile, then include delivery, handling, substrate preparation, waterproofing where needed, installation materials, edge details, cutting and labor. Generic market prices may not reflect your size, finish or site conditions.
Ask what is included in each quote and who is responsible for measuring and confirming quantities. Before installation, check delivered material against the order and review visible condition, finish and any batch information with your installer.
Confirm care and place a complete order
Follow the tile and grout manufacturers’ cleaning instructions. Do not assume every porcelain finish requires the same cleaner or sealer. Test approved products in an inconspicuous area and avoid abrasive methods unless specifically permitted.
