Steel French Doors: A Complete Buyer's Guide

Sleek steel French doors enhance patio access.

Steel French doors combine glazed openings with defined metal profiles. They can frame a patio view, brighten an entry or separate interior rooms, but appearance alone does not establish weather performance, energy efficiency or security. Compare the exact door assembly and its intended use before ordering.

Start with the USA Builders Depot steel door collection, then use the checklist below to discuss your opening with your installer and our team.

Choose a layout for the opening

Compare the proportions of the glass, the pattern of the divided lites and the frame profile with the rest of your home. Product names may describe a single-door French style or a paired assembly, so confirm the actual configuration rather than relying on the name alone.

For a double door, identify the active leaf used most often and how the other leaf opens and secures. If the design includes sidelights or a transom, request dimensions for the complete assembly. Check that the selected model is intended for your interior or exterior location; an interior assembly should not be assumed suitable for an exposed entry.

Confirm dimensions, handing and clearances

Have your installer distinguish the rough opening, frame outside dimensions, nominal product size and usable clear opening. They are not interchangeable. Record the opening’s width and height, wall depth, finished floor levels and any obstructions before choosing a size.

Confirm inswing or outswing, hinge position and the active leaf using a drawing with the viewing direction identified. Do not rely on a verbal “left” or “right” alone. Check room for handles, furniture, steps and adjacent doors throughout the swing. Use our French door measuring guide to prepare the information, then obtain approval of the final dimensions before ordering.

Balance daylight, privacy and glass requirements

Compare clear and privacy glass options available for the specific door. A sample or photo helps show texture, but privacy also changes with lighting and viewing distance. Ask which glass construction is supplied and whether the design you want is available in that assembly.

Lite count describes the visual arrangement, not a thermal, impact or security rating. Review our glass lite configuration guide for design comparisons. Your project team should confirm the glazing and documentation required for the location; decorative appearance alone does not demonstrate compliance.

Request evidence for the exact assembly

Steel is a material choice, not a guarantee that every door is insulated, thermally broken, corrosion-proof or suitable for every climate. Ask for documentation that matches the model, dimensions, glass and configuration you intend to buy.

  • Thermal performance: confirm any claimed ratings and thermal-break construction for the complete assembly.
  • Exterior exposure: confirm the intended environment, coating care and available air, water or structural performance documentation.
  • Security: review the frame, anchoring, glass and locking system together. Steel gauge alone does not establish forced-entry performance.
  • Special requirements: obtain specific evidence for any fire or impact rating required by your project.

Our steel door technical resources provide a starting point for documentation requests. Have your installer or project professional review suitability before purchase.

Select hardware that fits the door preparation

Check whether the quoted door includes handles and locks. If they are separate, confirm compatibility with the exact model, door thickness, lock preparation and handing. Similar-looking handles are not necessarily interchangeable.

Double-door configurations may need different hardware for the active and inactive leaves. Confirm the complete hardware list, including any securing components, with the supplier. Select a finish that complements the door, but settle compatibility before appearance.

Plan installation and ongoing care

Give the installer the current instructions for the selected assembly before delivery. Discuss access, safe handling, opening preparation, anchoring, alignment, weatherproofing and threshold details. Installation requirements vary; use the applicable manufacturer instructions rather than a generic sequence.

At completion, check operation, latch engagement and alignment with the installer. Keep the product documentation and warranty. Follow the specified cleaning and maintenance instructions, inspect seals and finish periodically, and address coating damage using an approved repair method. Steel doors should not be described as rust-proof or maintenance-free.

Prepare a complete quote request

Send the model or design reference, opening measurements, required assembly dimensions, swing diagram, wall depth, glass preference, hardware requirements and installation location. Include project timing and delivery access so the quote can cover the complete scope.

Confirm current availability, production or dispatch timing, delivery charges, installation responsibilities and warranty terms in writing. Custom doors and windows are non-returnable; eligible in-stock returns carry a 25% restocking fee. Review the current return policy before ordering.
