French door blinds can help you adjust light and privacy, but the right solution depends on the door and glazing you have. Compare a factory-integrated blind option with a compatible surface-mounted treatment before ordering or modifying the door.

Compare built-in and surface-mounted blinds
A between-the-glass blind is part of a designed glazing system. A surface-mounted blind or shade is a separate treatment fitted using an approved mounting arrangement. Do not assume an existing sealed glass unit can be opened to add a blind.

Confirm the door and glazing specification
Send the supplier the door model, dimensions, glass layout and photographs or drawings. Ask whether the proposed blind is offered for that configuration and whether it changes the glazing specification, warranty or documented performance.
For an existing door, get approval before drilling into the frame or leaf, changing glazing or adding brackets. Magnetic and over-door systems are not universally compatible, and “no drill” does not guarantee that a treatment will avoid finish damage or interference with seals.

Measure the whole operating space
Check more than the visible glass width and height. Give the treatment supplier the frame profile, available mounting area and handle projection. Confirm dimensions against the supplier's measuring instructions before ordering.
- Allow the handle and lock to operate fully.
- Check the door's complete swing, including nearby walls and furniture.
- Confirm clearance at hinges, seals and the meeting edges of double doors.
- Check access to active- and inactive-leaf hardware.
- Confirm whether approved hold-down fittings are required and included.
- For powered options, confirm power, service access and operation requirements.

Set realistic light and privacy goals
Decide whether you want glare control, adjustable views, nighttime privacy or room darkening. Ask to see the available material and its appearance from both sides. A light-filtering description does not guarantee privacy in every lighting condition.
Likewise, a blackout fabric does not by itself guarantee a fully dark room; perimeter gaps and the installed arrangement matter. Ask the treatment supplier how the proposed system handles those edges.
Compare the finish with the door, handles and surrounding room. Confirm the offered blind colors rather than assuming a black door includes a matching black blind.
Review care, warranty and service
Built-in blinds do not justify a promise of zero maintenance. Obtain the instructions for the glass, controls and any serviceable components. Ask what happens if the mechanism sticks, a control detaches or the glazing needs service.
Do not force a stuck control, open a sealed glass unit or apply lubricant without the manufacturer's direction. Follow the specified cleaning method for the door finish, glass and any surface-mounted treatment; avoid assuming one household cleaner is suitable for all three.
Read the warranty for the blind, glazing and door separately where applicable. Confirm who handles a service request, which parts are covered and what modifications could affect coverage.
